The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is the most popular route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m). Known for its stunning scenery, varied landscapes, and strong acclimatization profile, the 6-day Machame Route offers an adventurous and rewarding trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
This route passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zones, offering one of the most diverse trekking experiences on Kilimanjaro.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival – Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to Hotel
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport, your professional mountain guide will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
In the evening, attend a detailed trek briefing covering safety procedures, altitude awareness, equipment checks, and route expectations.

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (2,835m)
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate where permits are processed before beginning your trek.
Hike through lush rainforest filled with giant ferns, moss-covered trees, and wildlife such as colobus monkeys and tropical birds.
Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Machame Camp → Shira Cave (3,750m)
Today’s hike transitions into heather and moorland zones with dramatic views of Kibo Peak.
Reach Shira Cave Camp, where you will enjoy a hot lunch and optional afternoon acclimatization hike to help your body adapt to the altitude.

Day 4: Shira Cave → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)
A crucial acclimatization day. Trek to Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp.
This “climb high, sleep low” strategy greatly improves altitude adaptation and increases summit success rates.

Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (3,995m) → Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Begin with the exciting ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, one of the highlights of the Machame Route.
After descending into Karanga Valley for lunch, continue to Barafu Camp, your summit base camp.
Rest, hydrate, and prepare your summit gear before sleeping early.

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Your summit attempt begins at midnight. Trek under starlit skies toward Stella Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa.
Witness a breathtaking sunrise from the summit before descending to Barafu Camp and continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight stay.
Habitat: Arctic (Summit) → Moorland (Descent)
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Time: 7–8 hours up / 4–6 hours down

Day 7: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate (1,650m) – Transfer to Hotel
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest back to Mweka Gate.

Transfer back to your hotel for a hot shower and celebration.
