The 7 Day Rongai Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the northern side near the Kenyan border. This route offers a gradual ascent, diverse landscapes, and excellent acclimatization, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a quieter Kilimanjaro experience.

With stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and a unique wilderness approach, the Rongai Route is a perfect choice for climbers who prefer fewer crowds and steady altitude gain.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) – Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Later, meet your experienced mountain guide for a detailed briefing about your Kilimanjaro trek. Your guide will review the route, safety procedures, and conduct a full gear check to ensure you are fully prepared.

After breakfast, transfer to the Rongai Gate via Marangu for registration. Your trek begins through farmland and rainforest, where you may spot colobus monkeys and diverse birdlife.

The trail ascends gradually to Rongai First Cave Camp, offering a gentle introduction to the climb.

Elevation: 2,620 m → 3,600 m

Continue trekking through rainforest into the moorland zone, where vegetation becomes sparse and alpine shrubs dominate the landscape.

Stop for lunch at the Second Cave before ascending toward Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak.

Elevation: 3,600 m → 4,300 m

Today’s trek is shorter but steeper as you ascend to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, dramatically located beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak.

Arrive by midday and spend the afternoon acclimatizing, exploring the area, and enjoying spectacular mountain scenery.

Elevation: 4,300 m → 4,700 m

Cross the alpine desert known as “The Saddle,” a vast expanse between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The landscape becomes rugged and barren as you approach Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.

Important: Prepare your summit gear (headlamp, warm clothing, gloves, snacks) before sleeping.

Elevation: 4,700 m → 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak) → 3,720 m

Around midnight, begin your ascent to the summit under a star-filled African sky. Trek slowly and steadily to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim.

From here, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa and the ultimate achievement of your Kilimanjaro climb.

After celebrating at the summit, descend to Kibo Hut for rest and continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.

Elevation: 3,720 m → 1,870 m

Descend through moorland and lush rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, you will sign out and receive your official Kilimanjaro certificate:

  • 🟡 Gold Certificate – Uhuru Peak

Afterward, transfer back to your hotel for a well-earned hot shower and celebration.
