7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb
Overview
The 7-Day Machame Route is one of the most scenic and successful ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m). Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers breathtaking landscapes, strong acclimatization, and excellent summit success rates.
This 7-day version allows for better altitude adjustment compared to the 6-day option, increasing your chances of safely reaching Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival – Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
Later in the evening, meet your certified mountain guide for a full trek briefing, safety overview, gear check, and Q&A session.

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (2,835m)
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and begin your ascent through dense rainforest.
Enjoy sightings of colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and vibrant birdlife as you trek to Machame Camp.

Day 3: Machame Camp → Shira Cave (3,750m)
Climb steadily into the heather and moorland zone. The landscape opens dramatically with views of Kibo Peak.
After reaching Shira Cave Camp, enjoy lunch followed by an optional acclimatization hike.

Day 4: Shira Cave → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)
A crucial acclimatization day. Trek to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp.
This “climb high, sleep low” strategy greatly improves altitude adaptation and summit success.

Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exciting highlight of the Machame Route.
Continue across valleys to reach Karanga Camp, allowing additional acclimatization before summit day.

Time: 3–4 hours

Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Ascend steadily to Barafu Camp, your summit base camp.
After lunch, rest and prepare your summit gear. Early dinner and sleep before the midnight summit push.

Time: 3–4 hours

Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Day 7: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Summit day begins around midnight. Trek slowly under the stars toward Stella Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa.
Celebrate at sunrise before descending to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Habitat: Arctic Zone (Summit) → Moorland
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Time: 7–8 hours up / 4–6 hours down
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate (1,650m) – Transfer to Hotel
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate:
🟡 Gold – Uhuru Peak
🟢 Green – Stella Point
Transfer back to your hotel for a well-earned rest and celebration.
